Heartland Naturists is a vibrant, non-landed organization based in the Kansas City area, dedicated to promoting enjoyable, family-friendly nude recreation while educating the public about the naturist lifestyle. The group organizes a variety of activities throughout the year, including monthly swims, nude bowling, house parties, road trips, nude skydiving, and a three-day naturist festival featuring a 5K run. These events are strictly non-sexual, with a firm prohibition against sexual displays and inappropriate behavior, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all participants.
Open to singles, couples, and families of all races, orientations, and life circumstances, Heartland Naturists strive to create an inclusive community. Background checks are conducted on all guests before they receive information about event locations, further enhancing the safety and trust within the group. The organization embraces the naturist philosophy, which views nudity as a natural state, while also recognizing practical reasons for wearing clothes, such as weather and safety considerations. This balanced approach is encapsulated in their guiding principle: “clothed when practical, unclothed when possible.”
The origins of Heartland Naturists date back to February 1982, when thirty local naturists from the Topeka and Lawrence area convened at Webb Garlinghouse’s home to form Kansans for a Natural Society (KNS). This group of friends, who had previously enjoyed skinny dipping at Boy Scout Lake near Lawrence, Kansas, sought to maintain their camaraderie and find new locations for naturist activities after the lake was closed to the public. In 1997, reflecting its expanded membership across a broader geographical area, KNS adopted the name Heartland Naturists.
Today, the majority of Heartland Naturists’ members reside in Kansas City and its surrounding metro areas. The organization welcomes members from all walks of life, including singles, couples, and families with children. As a non-landed organization, Heartland Naturists does not own any land or facilities, instead holding events at members’ homes or rented venues. Occasionally, the group travels to nearby naturist resorts and clubs.
Heartland Naturists requires nudity at events, although exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for women and children. The organization emphasizes a friendly and respectful atmosphere, strictly prohibiting any form of sexual conduct. This policy ensures that the environment at events is one of safety, comfort, and mutual respect, allowing everyone, including families with children, to relax and enjoy the freedom of naturism without fear of inappropriate behavior.
Naturists are ordinary people who choose to be nude when and where appropriate, observing all applicable ethics and laws. Heartland Naturists is committed to fostering a family-oriented environment where individuals can break free from societal restraints and body shame, experiencing the exhilaration and freedom that naturism offers. The organization looks forward to welcoming new members and helping them discover the joys of naturism.
